Research note: task completion time
Note
This is a worked example with illustrative data, not a research finding. Replace the question, method, values, and sources with your own.
Question
How long does it take to find a named file using the search panel?
Method
- Start the timer when the participant opens search.
- Stop when the named file is open.
- Keep the file set and instructions the same between trials.
- Record device, app version, participant selection, and any interruptions.
Observations
| Trial | Time (seconds) | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 12 | No interruption |
| 2 | 15 | Query corrected once |
| 3 | 9 | No interruption |
Calculation
The arithmetic mean of the three example times is:
The calculation is written out explicitly. The editor renders the equation; it does not calculate or validate it.
Interpretation
Three illustrative observations are not enough to draw a conclusion about usability. Separate what was observed from what you think explains it.
